Hurricane Floyd's Aftermath
WANT TO HELP?
9-24-99
Greensboro News & Record
Several nonprofit organizations, churches, schools and other associations are gathering emergency supplies for hurricane victims. Organizations such as the American Red Cross prefer cash because of the difficulty they often face in having to ship items to disaster areas. Cash also is easier to use and helps the local economy in an affected area, officials say.

However, some organizations are asking for specific items to truck to the disaster area. Several groups are collecting items and sponsoring the trucks to get them there.

Also, organizations need volunteers to help collect and sort donated items. They also want organizations to start food drives or to volunteer services -- such as a truck -- to get the items to the Eastern part of the state. Call the information number for any of the listed agencies for volunteer information.

The Governor's Office is requesting financial donations to the Governor's Hurricane Relief Fund. Send checks or money orders to: Office of the Governor, 20301 Mail Services Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-0301. Call (888) 786-7601 or (888) 835-9966 for more information. The office is working to establish drop-off points for food and clothing for local food banks and clothing drives for those affected by the flood. The office also is working with area Lowe's Food stores to establish drop-off bins for nonperishable, non-glass donations, including baby formula, diapers, cleaning products and canned foods.

The North Carolina Restaurant Association is encouraging all restaurants to pledge 10 percent of sales on Sunday -- if not open on Sunday, pick another day -- to the Governor's Hurricane Floyd Disaster Relief Fund. Restaurants choosing to participate are being asked to place signs in their businesses. Restaurants are asked to send contributions directly to the Hurricane Floyd Disaster Relief Fund, 20301 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-0301. (Federal Tax ID Number 56-0564547).

The American Red Cross is seeking financial donations to its emergency relief fund. Contributions may be made to the Disaster Relief Fund by calling (800) HELP NOW; by sending checks to: American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013; or by dropping off a check at your local Red Cross office. In Greensboro, that's 1501 Yanceyville St. In High Point, it's at 815 Phillips Ave.

The Nussbaum Blood Center on Yanceyville Street will be open 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays to collect blood to offset low inventory levels because of Hurricane Floyd. Blood drives were canceled because of the recent storms. Check your local telephone directory for a list of Red Cross agencies, and the local branch can give you a list of blood drives.

The Red Cross is asking people to donate blood as quickly as possible. In Greensboro, the Red Cross is seeing large numbers of donors. But the pace still needs to increase, said Mary Eubanks, a spokeswoman for the local chapter.

The Salvation Army is collecting monetary donations for its relief, recovery and restoration efforts. The organization has issued an urgent two-state request for nonperishable food, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, bottled water, paper products and baby care items. Call (800) SAL-ARMY for more information.

Churches or large groups wishing to donate large collections should call ahead (299-9200) so volunteers can help unload the items. The mall has loading docks and room to store items that the Salvation Army cannot. For more information or a more detailed list of items, call the mall office at 292-0171. Checks made out to the Salvation Army relief fund also will be collected.
